It is evident that understanding contemporary land reclamation requires understanding the role reclamation plays in ‘making’ the city. Fieldwork will be undertaken in 8 primary cities to understand the presence, form, and function of completed reclamation initiatives. Fieldwork investigations will document and synthesize projects and their impacts on the city at ground level. How is the ground of existing city engaged? How does new ground interface with the sea? Can ‘terra novus’ restructure the territory of the city at large? A dialogue with other disciplines is required along with the comprehension of specific logics which contribute to the definition of coastal cities today. Visits to physical sites will be supplemented by meetings with universities and experts in land reclamation and associated fields.
